Writing Skills
The following give descriptions of the work I have done that display my skills in business and technical writing.
Technical Communication: Product Manual
Francis Marion University Spring 2011
In my Technical Communication course, three group members and I created a cohesive manual based on a new product that we designed and built. I managed my individual duties as well as tasks for my group members. My team edited and revised a second group's manual and suggested improvements during a Quality Assurance meeting in class. We also arranged extra meetings outside of class and online to ensure that our work was completed on time.
Literary Magazine: Snow Island Review
Francis Marion University Fall 2010 – Fall 2011
Once per semester, students can submit entries of their written work and artwork to be published in Francis Marion University's literary magazine, The Snow Island Review. As a staff member, I participated with 10 to 15 people to vote on submissions that we thought were worthy of inclusion. We discussed the aspects of each piece that an audience of our peers would enjoy by expressing our honest, constructive criticism, keeping in mind that the author could be a staff member.
In addition to being on staff, I submitted multiple entries of written work and artwork that were selected and published in three editions of The Snow Island Review. Click here for more information about the literary magazine.
Computer Science Skills
The following give a description for two projects I have worked on that display my skills in computer design and development.
System and Software Design and Development: Animal Shelter Project
Francis Marion University Fall 2009 – Spring 2010
For this project, I worked with a partner to produce a database system that functioned for a fictional animal shelter. The goal was to reduce overcrowding by implementing an automated system of identification numbers for every animal brought into the shelter. We also created an accompanying website that displayed the information and pictures of animals that were available for adoption.
I was able to experience every step of the design and development processes, from interviewing the client (in this case, our professor posing as the animal shelter manager) to designing the database based on our "use case" diagrams, domain dictionaries, and domain scopes.
Visual Technology
Baptist Collegiate Ministries Spring 2011 – Fall 2011
Outside of class, I created and directed the video announcements and slideshows for worship services that occurred every Tuesday night. During each service, I had to ensure that an audience of 100 to 130 students could clearly see the projected display. I used large, sans-serif font for the text (usually lyrics to the songs that were being performed) and chose appropriate colors and images for the background. In addition, I practiced with the Praise Band before each service to confirm that the lyrics and timing of the slideshows were correct.
